Composition Assignment #1: Guidelines

Composition Assignment #1 is about hunting. We went into a discussion on the topic by looking at these questions:

  1. What are your views on hunting?
  2. Do you see hunting as a sport or not?
  3. Should Man only hunt for food?
  4. Should all animals be hunted for food?
  5. Do you believe an animal suffers when hunted?  Why or why not?
  6. How would you feel if you were the hunted person? Would you feel fear? anger? confusion?
  7. How would you change animals being hunted?
  8. Would  you be grateful for the sacrifice the animal made?
  9. Should hunting be limited to certain times of the year?
  10. How can an animal be killed mercifully?

Questions 7 , 8 and 9 were added by the group.  I added the last one which was not mentioned in the discussion.

I will use this Criteria for evaluating Composition Assignment #1 on the topic of Hunting.

The composition should be submitted on or before September the 5th at the latest. After that it’s tardy. ~~LMM

Close reading of texts

Some of you were a bit confused with the work I assigned for the next class (see previous post).

I sent one of your classmates some questions to use as a guide for the discussion.  I’m including them in this post.

These are the three strategies for close reading:

(1) Comprehension: Key Ideas and Details

(2) Text analysis: Craft and Structure

(3) Connections: Integration of Knowledge and Ideas

These guide questions should  help you summarize each of the reading strategies:

Comprehension: Key Ideas and Details:

  •  What should you do first?
  • How can you use context clues?
  • What else can you do to understand things that are not familiar to you?

Text analysis: Craft and Structure:

  • How does the author present ideas?
  • How does the author write?
  • What kinds of images does the author use?
  • How does he tell the story?

Connections: Integration of Knowledge and Ideas:

  • Can you identify the relationships and ideas?
  • Are there important images or symbols in the story that have other meanings?
  • How can these give the reader an idea of the theme of the story?

Group 9.1 (2014-2015):

Students

For the next class we will discuss strategies to use when reading texts closely.

Do the following:

Read the content from pages 4-6 “Close Reading Workshop” (I’ve scanned the pages for you.)

Close Reading Workshop page 4

Close Reading Workshop page 5

Close Reading Workshop page 6

Name the three strategies for the close reading of texts. Briefly summarize each strategy in your own words.

Read the short story “The Old Man at the Bridge” by Ernest Hemmingway using the strategies as a guide.
